Advanced Performance Study Composition Folio

The Jewel In The Lotus
Composer: Taana Rose
Copyright 2019 APRA AMCOS
A prayer and invocation for harmony.
For Mezzo-Soprano and small orchestra.

The Jewel In The Lotus is a convergence of musical cultures and showcases the beautiful emotive instruments in the string family. Various timbres and techniques are utilised to play these stunning string instruments to create a musical tapestry, this piece combines harp, violin, cello and double bass with self-designed electronic arp patches and mantra meditation singing to create a filmic electro-acoustic composition.
The inspiration for this piece was the Tibetan teaching that one may rise out of the mud and blossom as the lotus flower does. The Tibetan mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum” reflects the compassionate ways in which all living beings and ecosystems can be treated to create harmony across the planet. Every living creature is the jewel in the lotus “Om Mani Padme Hum”.
The dissonant section of the composition symbolises the “mud” of everyday life that the lotus must get through, once the lotus has broken free of the “mud” it rises and the consonance to dissonant to consonant trajectory reflects this journey.
Lyrics:
Om mani padme. Om mani padme.
Om mani padme. Om mani padme.
Om mani padme, om mani padme hum, mani padme hum.
Om mani padme, mani padme hum. Mani padme hum.
Om, mani padme, mani padme.
Mani padme hum. Om mani padme, mani padme, mani padme hum.
Mani padme hum.
Om mani padme, mani padme.
Om mani padme, mani padme hum, om mani padme hum.

Composer & Librettist: Taana Rose Copyright 2019 APRA AMCOS.
Performed by Nina Wildman (Soprano) and Melfred Lijauco (Piano).
Recorded, mixed and mastered by Matt Sorensen.

Autumn Ayre is inspired by early madrigals and Ayres. This piece embodies the coming of winter and invokes the cold of the changing seasons. The piece is to be performed by a pianist and Classical Soprano in a meditative fashion, both performers are to think of the imagery of falling autumn leaves and the impermanence of the past. The piece is to be performed as part of a scene, in which the protagonist, a strong female lead character, sings of the pain of her past strife and overcoming these past emotions, to thrive, bloom and become strong in the present. The symbolism of nature represents the lead characters journey to become the woman she is today.

Lyrics:
Leaves are turning, hearts are burning, burning. The cold creeps in gives you pins and needles, Dusk turns to dawn, you are reborn, you are reborn. Once forlorn you are reborn, you are reborn. Winter has come, do not feel numb, you are full of life, you got through your strife.
Mi amor, la luna
Composer & Librettist: Taana Rose Copyright 2019 APRA AMCOS.
This work tells the story of a beautiful woman singing to the full moon. She stands at the waters edge, the city lights are reflected in the Brisbane river and she feels a sense of calm being at peace with the world and at one with nature, she sings to the moon, the moon who is always there for her and sees her through the darkest nights, reigniting all the lights.

Performed by Nina Wildman (Classical Soprano), Jess Hall (Flute), Melfred Lijauco (Piano). Recorded and mixed by Matt Sorensen.
Photograph artwork: Susanne Tietze.

Lyrics:
Mi amor, la luna, la luna mi amor. Mi amor, la luna, la luna mi amor. I love the moon, she sees me through, the darkest nights and reignites all, all of the lights. La luna mi amor, la luna mi amor. Mi amor, la luna, la luna mi amor. Mi amor, la luna, la luna mi amor. Mi amor, la luna, la luna mi amor. All of the lights come back on, you are feeling strong. I love the moon, she sees me through, the darkest nights and reignites all of the lights. Mi amor, la luna, la luna mi amor. Mi amor, la luna, la luna mi amor.

Waves
For Soprano, Alto, Baritone, Violin, Viola, Cello and Piano.

Comprised of two movements:
I. Adagio
II. Andante

lyrics
I. Waves, roiling toiling waves. Influenced by the moon. Can you see the glassy green waves reflections on a cloudless moonlit sky, I wonder why. Can you fly, like a gull up above, the turn, the eagle the dove, I will fly up above. Up above, my love do not despair, you shall get there, one day when the time is right, you shall take flight. Do not give up, love is like a turtle dove. Turtle dove. A dove and the dove will fly away. One day when the time, time is right, you shall take flight you shall take flight. I believe in you my friend, my friend. Until the bitter end.

For Trombone, Piano, Synth Pad, Choir and Violin

Grazia is an atmospheric meditation composition, which fuses electronic synthesisers with a virtual choir and acoustic trombone, piano and violin.
The violin plays in a pizzicato fashion and the synth string pad acts as an accompaniment to the choral melody lines. The piece invokes a calm atmosphere for the listener.
“Grazia” is a fusion of classical instrumental music, choral music, electronic music and meditation music to soothe the soul. The repeated motifs are much like breathing, repeated and calming the nervous system.
